2021 Ram TRX Launch Edition

stuck inside on the fourth, storms all morning, so here is the question i have been sitting on. 2021 TRX Launch Edition, 38,400 miles. maybe 4,000 of those are dirt, mostly the beach at Bolivar and a couple of trips to Hidden Falls. the ride has gotten busier over the last year. small chop on the freeway shows up in the seat more than it used to and the rear feels floaty over the dips on 290.
no leaks i can see, no warning lights. the shocks are the Bilstein Black Hawk e2 adaptive ones the TRX came with. Ram does not say much on ramtrucks.com about service intervals for them. do people service these, replace them, or am i imagining it.

you are probably not imagining it. any shock that has seen 38k loses some damping, and the first place you feel it is exactly what you said, high frequency chop and the rear wallowing. the adaptive part masks it a little because the valves firm up when the computer sees motion, so it fades slower than a passive shock would.
servicing. the e2 can be serviced, but there are not a lot of shops set up for them because of the electronics. we send ours out. new ones from Mopar are expensive enough that people get quiet when they hear the number. before you spend anything, find a shop with a shock dyno and have the rears pulled and run. a graph tells you in ten minutes what a butt dyno tells you in a year.

following this. i just got a 2022 TRX with 24k on it and the ride is noticeably tighter than a friend's 2021 with 45k. i figured it was his tires. after reading fox i am less sure.

Raptor side for comparison. my gen 2 Fox shocks at about 60k felt the same way, busy on the highway, floaty in back. had them rebuilt with new seals and fresh oil and nitrogen and it was like a new truck for a third of what new shocks would have cost. the TRX ones are more complicated but i would bet it is the same story underneath.

found a shop in Spring with a shock dyno. pulled the rears, ran both. they printed the curves next to a baseline they had from a new one. rebound on both rears was down a good chunk at the higher shaft speeds, compression was close to the new one. left rear a little worse than the right. they said that is typical for a truck that has spent time on washboard. fronts they did not pull, they said the rears are where it shows up first on a TRX.
they quoted a service with new seals and oil by sending them out, about two weeks of downtime, or new from the dealer for a lot more and same day. sending them out. i will post the after.

that is exactly the pattern i would expect. rebound fades first. good call sending them out. when they come back, check the tire pressures before you judge the ride. a lot of TRX owners run the door sticker pressure on the road and then wonder why it is busy, and a few psi either way changes the feel more than you would guess.

since tire pressure came up. what are TRX guys running on the road? my ZR2 on the 315s rides way better at 32 than the 38 the tire shop put in, and the wear looks even. curious if the big trucks are the same.
