grand_junction told me to make my own thread so here it is. i am 27, Las Cruces, 2014 Tacoma Access Cab with 168k that runs fine and i am tired of it. i want a 2019 to 2021 Colorado ZR2 or maybe a gen 2 Raptor if one comes up cheap. budget is around 40 all in with about 8 down. i have never financed anything bigger than a laptop.

i talked to my credit union and to my insurance agent this week about buying a repo truck through a sealed bid. writing down what they said so i do not forget and so somebody can tell me if i got it wrong.

credit union. they pre-approved me for up to 34,000 on a 2019 or newer, 60 months. the pre-approval is good for 60 days. they will not hand me a check. they fund to the seller once they have a document with the VIN, the seller, and the price on it. they have to be on the title as lienholder, so the title has to be clean and in the seller's name or the bank's with a release. and they lend on the book value, so if i overbid and the truck books at 31, they lend 31 and i cover the rest.

agent. she said the day i win, i call her with the VIN and she binds full coverage before i send a dollar, because the credit union will want proof of insurance and because once i pay, it is my truck even if it is still in Oklahoma or wherever. she also said the performance trims rate higher, a Raptor quoted almost 60 a month more than a ZR2 for me.

what i have not done yet is ask the m&a office what paperwork they give a lender. calling monday.

El Paso, 45 minutes down I-10 from you. your agent is right about the Raptor rate, mine costs me more than my Ranger did by about 70 a month and i am a boring driver. at 40 all in i would look hard at the ZR2 with the 2.8 Duramax. it tows well, it gets real mileage, and the gen 2 Raptors in your price range are going to be high mile trucks with the cam phaser thing coming, see the thread on that. a gen 2 Raptor at 40 is somebody's 100k mile truck.

good write up. the one thing i would add from my side. once you win it is not a negotiation, the invoice shows up with wire instructions. so ask the m&a people two things on monday: what document comes with the invoice that has the VIN, the seller and the price, and how the title and lien release come to you. if your credit union sees those before you ever bid, they can tell you yes or no in advance and you are not scrambling on a friday afternoon.

update. i called M and A. the woman i talked to said payment is by wire like everybody here says, and the invoice has the VIN, the vehicle and the amount on it. i emailed that to my loan officer and she said that is all they need to send the wire themselves, she just wants the invoice the same day i get it. the credit union also wants the title mailed to them, not me, once it is released, which she said they do with every out of state purchase.

and i already lost my first one. a 2020 ZR2 gas in Summit White, 52k miles. bid 31,500 because that is what the credit union said it booked at, and somebody bid more. no idea how much. i was annoyed for about an hour and then realized my number was my number for a reason.

insurance tip from a TRX owner who learned the hard way. get quotes from two agents before you bid, not after. my first quote on the TRX was 410 a month, the second one was 265 for the same coverage. also ask about gap. if you are putting 8 down on a truck you bought at or under book value, you probably do not need gap, but ask what the credit union requires, some make you carry it.

won one. 2021 Colorado ZR2, 2.8 Duramax, crew cab, 41k miles, red, at a lender yard in Oklahoma City. sealed bid of 36,250. the credit union funded 30,000 because that was their book number on that truck and i put in 6,250. agent bound coverage the morning after the win email, 148 a month full coverage, and sent the card to the loan officer. the wire went from the credit union the same afternoon.

Oklahoma City to Las Cruces is about 620 miles so delivery is free. it should be here in the middle of the month. the listing is gone from the m&a auction site now, but it had a door sticker photo, so i already know the tire size and the axle ratio, which will make the guys in the suspension board happy.

the Tacoma goes on marketplace this weekend if anybody in southern New Mexico wants a 168k truck that will probably outlive all of us.
